Arbeitszeugnis

A formal work reference letter that German employers are legally required to provide when you leave a job.

The Arbeitszeugnis is a formal work reference letter issued by your employer when you leave a company. German employers are legally required to provide one upon request.

There are two types:

  • Einfaches Arbeitszeugnis — Simple reference confirming dates and job title only
  • Qualifiziertes Arbeitszeugnis — Detailed reference including performance evaluation and conduct assessment

The qualifiziertes Arbeitszeugnis uses a coded language where seemingly positive phrases can actually be negative. For example, "to our full satisfaction" (zur vollen Zufriedenheit) is roughly a grade B, while "always to our fullest satisfaction" (stets zur vollsten Zufriedenheit) is an A+.

Future employers in Germany expect to see an Arbeitszeugnis. Request it in writing at least 2-3 weeks before your last day.
