Job description

We are looking for a Master’s student to conduct their thesis project within our prototyping and applied systems team, contributing to applied research in Human–Computer Interaction and Human–AI Interaction, with a strong emphasis on interactive systems, prototyping, and empirical evaluation.

In this role, you will work closely with researchers and engineers to explore how people interact with intelligent, adaptive systems through novel interfaces. The work focuses on building and evaluating interactive prototypes, designing experiments, and turning applied system work into rigorous, communicable research outputs.

This position is ideal for someone interested in HCI as a systems-driven discipline, spanning interaction design, implementation, experimentation, and analysis.

The intention is to align the role with a Master’s thesis, depending on topic fit and supervision availability.

Start: April or May 2026, Duration: 4–6 months.

What you will do

  • Design, build, and iterate on interactive prototypes and research systems

  • Implement interaction logic, sensing pipelines, and experimental infrastructure

  • Plan and conduct a user study (study design, data collection, analysis)

  • Collaborate with researchers, engineers, and designers during rapid iteration cycles

  • Analyze results and help translate findings into reports, demos, and research material

  • Contribute to scientific writing and documentation for internal or external dissemination

What we offer

  • Hands-on experience across the full arc of applied research

  • Close collaboration with experienced BCI researchers

  • A pragmatic, low-hierarchy environment with room to take ownership

  • Flexible scheduling around exams and coursework

  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s program in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Cognitive Science, Human-AI Interaction, or a related field

  • Strong interest in HCI and human-centered interactive systems

  • Solid programming skills (e.g. Python, JavaScript, C#, or similar) and experience building interactive systems

  • Basic familiarity with experimental design and user research methods, or strong motivation to learn

  • Ability to translate research questions into working prototypes and studies

  • Comfortable working with ambiguous, open-ended problems

  • Availability for 20 hours/week during the employment period (April/May–September/October 2026)

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with HCI literature and evaluation methods

  • Experience with interactive prototyping environments (e.g. Unity, web-based systems, or similar)

  • Exposure to AI-driven or adaptive interfaces

  • Experience with data analysis or statistical methods

  • Prior involvement in research projects, demos, or publications
